Ensembles and Choirs
Bells of Saint Bede
The handbell choir, while primarily composed of adults, is open to students in the 9th grade and upward. The choir rings our three octaves of Malmark handbells and three octaves of handchimes. The ringers rehearse on Wednesdays 4:30pm – 6:00pm and play at the Saturday 5:30pm Mass every other week.
Cantors are not soloists but singers who proclaim God’s word in song such as the psalm and Gospel acclamations and lead the sung texts when no choir is present. Cantors should possess a pleasant, clear and accurate voice. Audition and rehearsals are scheduled individually.
This scholarship is available to a degree seeking undergraduate or graduate student dependent upon demonstrable choral training and singing ability and following a successful audition. Choral Scholars are recruited to sing in the Parish Choir, the Schola Cantorum and to serve as psalmist.
Contemporary Praise Ensemble
This ensemble leads the music at the 5pm Sunday Mass and also provides musical accompaniment for the monthly Wednesday evening Eucharistic Adoration service. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays 7:00pm - 8:30pm.
Coro la Paz
This choir is part of our Spanish Mass and accompanies all Spanish liturgies and sings year round. Rehearsals are bilingual and on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm.
Instrumentalists are used at Masses to enhance the musical song of the Church. Audition, rehearsals and Masses are scheduled individually.
This choir includes those from high school age and upward. Music sung ranges in style from Gregorian chant to the best of modern choral literature. The choir sings alternately at the 9am or 11am Sunday Mass from September to early June. Rehearsals are Thursdays 6:00pm – 8pm.
The Schola Cantorum, an auditioned choir, sings predominantly Latin and English a capella choral music every other week at the 9am Mass. It requires a good familiarity with reading music and individual confidence in singing a voice part. Rehearsals are Thursdays 8pm – 9:00pm.
Children in grades 3 through 9 sing in this choir and play handbells which rehearses on Tuesdays 5:00pm – 6:15pm. The Young Choristers sing and/or play every other week at the 11am Mass. Based on the Royal School of Church Music model of music education, the Young Choristers sing choral music, play handbells and choir chimes, and are given Catholic liturgical formation.
Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra and Band
This ensemble provides an outlet and opportunity for players of all ages to play together and learn from each other. Rehearsals are clustered around the performance dates with advance distribution of music. They present frequent concerts and programs in our church and around the community. Reaching Out With Music
Since our church was built in 2003, it has been sought out as a place for concerts and recitals because of its very fine acoustical environment and fine pipe organ. Pay close attention to the parish bulletin and local media for the concerts that are presented here. We have been very gratified to be able to host the best in good choral and instrumental music and will continue to do so in the future.
